It’s funny to think how many superhero movies we have now, especially those made on a large scale, that once had low-budget and not very well thought out or received movies. Fans of the genre are lucky to live in a time where superhero stories are cherished and we’re given these fascinating universes for characters to play out.

I hadn’t given much thought to when that turnover occurred, paving the way from mediocre films to box-office smashers involving Hollywood’s biggest names, but the director Christopher Nolan is ready to set the record straight.
In the 80s and 90s, we got the Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher Batman movies that were cartoony and wild. They were very entertaining for their time and attracted some big names and good performances, but they weren’t movie dramas for any movie fan to enjoy. This occurred in 2005 when Nolan took over the lore of Batman and returned to the origin story in Batman begins. Since this was the first time a character had been brought back to tell the exact story of him in a new way, Nolan explained in an old interview with Film Comment:
“It’s a sign of how quickly things change in the movie business, but there was no ‘reboot’ conceptually. That idea didn’t exist when I came to see Batman. This is new terminology. Warner Bros. owned this wonderful character and didn’t know what to do with it. He had hit a dead end with his previous iteration.
Nolan had previously explained in an interview with Verbicide how his Batman was different from Burton’s, and even from the comics, saying:
“If you look at what Tim Burton has done, it’s specifically a world that’s been created that Batman fits into. It’s this grand gothic vision that’s very consistent and consistent with the character of Batman. What I felt I hadn’t seen, especially in the comics, was an ordinary world that we could live in Gotham.
“When a Gothamite sees Batman, it’s as extraordinary as it would be in our world. I wanted an extraordinary character against the background of an ordinary world. That’s not what Tim did, so I thought it was a whole other direction to go.
It certainly was different and I think it opened the door to what these types of movies could be in the future.
