Baker was born to James AND Gina Mayfield in Austin, Texas on April 14, 1995. He has one brother, matt mayfield, who is five years older and also grew up playing sports. Baker once confessed that she loves being the baby of the family and wished her mother a wonderful Mother’s Day in 2021. “Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, but especially to this sweet lady!” she captioned an earlier Instagram post that featured her mother to him. “I love you mom, thank you for not having any more children and for becoming the middle child.”
Baker Mayfield helped change the NCAA rules
After turning down offers from Washington State, Florida Atlantic, and RiceBaker, Mayfield joined the Texas Tech University football team as a freshman. He became the starting quarterback, and for a reason: By the end of his rookie season in 2013, he had thrown for 2,315 yards on 218 of 340 completions and 12 touchdowns, according to his website. However, he dropped out of school when he discovered that his success would not get him a scholarship.
He was then accepted to Oklahoma, but because he transferred from another Big 12 school, he missed a year of eligibility to play in the 2014-2015 season. Baker and his family have tried to appeal the rule multiple times, pointing out that his case shouldn’t count because he was a backup at Texas Tech and never a scholarship drafted player. However, in June 2016, the Baker Rule was passed and a player without a written scholarship offer from the school he intended to transfer from became eligible to play at a new intra-conference school without penalty.
Baker capped off his college career with the 2017 Heisman Trophy, which is the highest award a college player can receive.
