For years, fans of the series’YOU’ I wondered what mental disorder he has Joe Goldberg and there are debates trying to define whether he is a psychopath or a sociopath, but season 4 of the series makes it clear that his insanity is growing by leaps and bounds and presents a new case that has never before come to light in the mind of the killer.
Just like in the first 3 seasons of “YOU”, the murderer Joe Goldberg is shown as an obsessive, control freak and narcissistic manand with strong psychopathic traits, but for the first time he is called an erotomaniac, after falling into the madness of his mind and losing control between reality and fiction.
Erotomania is explained as a personality disorder that causes one person to generate a great obsession with another, which can have romantic or sexual overtones but in the case of Joe Goldberg it goes further, transforming Rhys Montrose into an alter ego that it helps deny his true nature as an evil serial killer.

As in the other seasons, you can see Joe Goldberg’s classic hidden box where he keeps the objects of the person who is obsessed with it, but for the first time a man is shown as his victim, but this does not mean that there are romantic overtones, so much unless the protagonist of “YOU” is in love with Rhys, the alleged murderer of the rich.
Joe Goldberg has multiple personality disorder
If you’ve followed all seasons of ‘YOU’ on Netflix, you know that erotomania is a disorder Joe Goldberg has always lived with, except in season 4 it takes it to a much more dangerous level, but really, this story features a new mental disorder for this character played by Penn Badley.
In season 4 of “YOU”, the serial killer surprises with multiple personality disorder, scientifically called “Dissociative identity disorder”, thus the evolution of his erotomania leads him to transform his new obsession into a personality that he can see and with which he can interact as if it were someone outside of him but at the same time take control of his actions.
The big surprise of “YOU” in season 4 is that Joe Goldberg splits into two personalities, although this has been known since season 1 thanks to the fact that one of them is the one who tells his whole life while the other is the way what is shown to the outside world, but in the new story, his dark side takes over and stays until the end, so it could be very interesting for a possible season 5.
