Disney CEO Bob Iger is looking to bolster the ship going forward at the company. In an appearance at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference, Iger was asked an open-ended question about the health of the company’s tentpole brands. First he remarked, “I think a lot of them are all my kids, in a way,” then he went on to say that as far as Star Wars va, “disappointing” box office returns in 2018 for Solo, one of two independent films integrated into three installments of the “saga”, “made us think” in terms of its feature film pipeline. Executives determined that “maybe the cadence was a little too aggressive,” he added. Disney is “still developing Star Wars movie,” Iger continued, but “we’re going to make sure that when we do one, it’s the right one. So we’re very careful there. He added that episodic series based on Star Wars mythology, including The Mandalorian, Andor and many others, were “hugely successful”.

He also talked about Marvel, saying:

“There are 7,000 characters, there are many more stories to tell. What we need to look at Marvel isn’t necessarily the sheer volume of Marvel stories we’re telling, but how many times we go back to the well on certain characters. Sequels generally work well for us. Do you need a third and a fourth, for example, or is it time to move on to other characters?

He went on to add:

“There is nothing inherently wrong with the Marvel brand. I think we just have to look at what characters and stories we’re mining. If you look at Marvel’s trajectory over the next five years, there’s going to be a lot of new stuff. Let’s go back to avengers franchise with an all-new Avengers series, for example.

Referring to Disney’s major brand, Iger said it remains “very strong, certainly the most powerful brand in family entertainment” 100 years after its creation. The next live-action version of The little Mermaid, he said, it attests to Disney’s might. “I think when you see it, it will remind you of how strong the brand is,” she said.

All of that sounds good. I hope they pick the next one Star Wars movies wisely. A lot is going down the path they choose and it will be interesting to see where it leads.
