Oscars 2023: Best film analysis
1 ‘tar’

From its memorable opening scene, ‘Tár’ goes straight, fearless and decisive. Written and directed by a Todd Field happily recovered for the cinematic cause, this story of power, loneliness, ambition, terror and art, among other elements that come together in its nearly 160 minutes, fascinates with solemnity, gravity and depth of both its background and its form. A film immense in its austerity and bombastic in its silences which, above all, will go down in the history of cinema thanks to the protagonist of a Cate Blanchett (well) beyond all praise. An ace in the hole strong enough to win the Oscar for best picture? No, but we’re talking about a film that, even if there were only five nominees in this category, more than likely would have entered.

2 “Top Gun: Maverick”

No one saw it coming. Well, maybe Tom Cruise did. In any case, the enormous commercial success of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, historical for the unexpected events and for the size of the accumulated money, is fully justified thanks to a film that overwhelmingly surpasses its predecessor in every section, offering a spectacular first class. Epic, thrilling, jaw-dropping action and a full cruise reigning in a blockbuster, the best of 2022, which even won an Academy happy to be included among the nominees for the jackpot of the night. Its presence among the ten is an award in itself, but the most important thing for this massive sequel is the key role it has played for the present and the future of cinemas., as Steven Spielberg himself pointed out to Cruise himself. There is no figurine that surpasses such an achievement.

3 “Avatar: The Sense of Water”

Despite failing to reach the nine nominations its gorgeous predecessor got, ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ ended up slipping among the films opting for the top award of the night. Of course, it does so in the lower part of the table, i.e. the one reserved for proposals that in no way would have entered if the classic quintet of the category had been maintained. However, even if it has no chance to lift the statuette, the spectacular sequel to James Cameron has achieved its main mission: to destroy the box offices of the whole world without any mercy. A huge commercial success more than deserved for one of the most impressive visual festivals of the last decades.

4 “The Triangle of Sadness”

The enthusiasm in the days leading up to the announcement of the nominations was remarkable and, when push came to shove, the surprise came true: “The Triangle of Sadness” was in the Best Picture category. And for best original screenplay and direction. Three nominations placed in really coveted categories that demonstrate how the Academy has proved right the extreme, irregular, nonchalant, acid and controversial proposal of a Ruben Östlund that continues to rise in terms of awards. In case there’s any doubts: There’s no way it’s going to win any of the awards it aspires to, but, hey, this Best Picture nomination isn’t taken away from anyone anymore.

5 “The Fabelmans”

During the very opening stages of the Oscar race, not to mention almost since its mere existence as a project was announced, “The Fabelmans” looked like the rival to beat in numerous categories, including Best Picture. A priori, we are talking about a film that had everything in its favor, starting with an emotionally open Steven Spielberg with a story in which he spoke both of his father and mother’s divorce and of the fundamental importance of the seventh art in all aspects of your life. And the truth is that, once you’ve seen the film, his triumph at the Oscars would be understandable yes, but also right, given that it’s about an excellent proposition from start to finish, directed with masterful drive, full of great performances and with moments that turn the screen into something very close to a miracle.
However, his options have dwindled a lot in recent weeks, leaving him in a kind of hypothetical third way together with ‘Inisherin’s Banshee’ if the total triumph of ‘All at Once Everywhere’ or the last second surprise of ‘ All at Once Everywhere’ or the last second surprise of ‘All Quiet on the Front’. While it seems incredible considering his meteoric career, all indications are that Spielberg will have to keep waiting to win his second Best Picture Oscar.

6 ‘all at once everywhere’

It hasn’t even been a year since its premiere, all right, but it’s impossible not to start adding this impressive ‘All at the same time everywhere’ to a list of the last decade’s most indisputable masterpieces. A storytelling prodigy elevated to the heights by an extraordinary cast, bar none, a script as exhilarating as it is moving, a dizzying pace and the total capacity to generate memorable scenes without respite. A contemporary classic. The best movie of 2022. One of the most astonishing cinematic phenomena of recent times and, almost certainly, one of the brightest Best Picture Oscar winners of the 21st century.

7 “The Banshees of Inisherin”

Get the most out of (apparently) the least. Martin McDonagh continues a career in which error is still nowhere to be found with ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, second consecutive masterpiece after the impressive ‘Three commercials in the suburbs’, a film which, by the way, should have won this same statuette six years ago. In that case it was ‘The shape of water’ that snatched the prize and, in this edition, it seems that it will be ‘All at once everywhere’ to do it, leaving it in a timid alternative that has never finished showing the strength to lift at least something resembling a fight. Sure, the preferential voting used in this category still leaves her with the possibility of winning, a possibility that would immediately increase if she won the Oscars for best supporting actress and original screenplay. It’s very complicated, but not impossible.

8 “Elvis”

In the end, without making too much noise and always with the effervescent Austin Butler at the helm, the splendid ‘Elvis’ by Baz Luhrmann it was ubiquitous in the prize race. And the Oscars, of course, were no exception. This fast-paced, crazy, tacky, epic and glamorous work garnered up to eight nominations, which managed to win over the devotees of the king of rock and make those who approached him for the first time fall in love with him. If he finally wins a statuette, no doubt, it will be those for Best Make-up and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design and Best Actor, the latter setting where he will have to fight to the last second with Brendan Fraser for ‘The Whale’. Beyond these three camps, little else seems reserved for a film which, in any case, remains one of the best biopics of recent years. And with a big difference from the rest.

9 ‘They speak’

There were several films that were fighting until the last second to enter the best picture category at the Oscars 2023, but in the end it was the aforementioned ‘The Triangle of Sadness’ and ‘They Talk’ that pulled it off. And in the case of Sarah Polley’s extraordinary proposal with special justice. A heartwarming story filled with memorable scenes and driven by a wonderful cast, we are facing one of the most underrated films of this awards season, a small masterpiece that time will hopefully place in the place it deserves. The Oscars, of course, don’t seem to be helping in that regard, though there’s still hope that Polley will win the statuette for Best Adapted Screenplay. Less is nothing.

10 “No news at the front”

Its nine nominations and huge success at the Baftas with seven awards, including Best Film, have made ‘All Quiet Front’ a the closest thing to a rival for “All at once everywhere”. And it is that, supported by the preferential voting system followed in the queen category, the remarkable film by Edward Berger can end up giving a considerable surprise, especially when we take into account that he will arrive at that key moment of the night with a good handful of technical statuettes in his backpack and a more than feasible Oscar for best adapted screenplay that could end up being the key. If he finally reaches the epic comeback, which would be on par with cases like ‘Moonlight’ or ‘CODA: Los sonidos del silencio’, we would be facing a more than worthy winner, perhaps not as innovative, risky and memorable as the film by Los Daniels, but also full of moments of great cinema.

“The triangle of sadness”. ‘tar’. “The Fabelmans”. ‘No news at the front’. “The Banshees of Inisherin”. “Top Gun: Maverick”. ‘They speak’. “Avatar: The Sense of Water”. ‘Elvis’. ‘Everything at once everywhere’. ten movies. An Oscar. The end of a journey towards the most coveted prize. The proximity of the target. It almost seems to hear the ovation dedicated to the tape that managed to win the 2023 Oscar for best film.

The queen category of the evening and, here comes the best, one of the most exciting since the preferential voting system was adopted, a method that enhances the possibility of a final surprise. Of course, it’s not always a happy turning point, there is ‘Green Book’ to prove it, but at least it serves to maintain tension and uncertainty up to the last second, even in a year like the one around the corner in which everything seems to be at a standstill. direction of the film Los Daniels. However, despite the favoritism, every time the envelope is opened and the corresponding star will name the winner, the nerves and the illusion reappear without remedy. And I hope they never disappear. The real magic of the Oscars.
