Sharon Stone claimed she lost custody of her child in 2004 due to assumptions created by her brief nudity in the film basic instinct,
Stone made the progress on a Tuesday table for two Podcast Interview. Stone played Catherine Tramell in the film, a serial killer and love interest for Michael Douglas. She memorably flashes her interviewers in one scene, creating a sensation for an image that was rare in mainstream cinema.
“I lost custody of my child,” she said. “When the judge asked my child – my boy -: ‘Do you know your mother makes sex movies?’ like that kind of abuse by the system, that kind of abuse that I was seen as the kind of parent that I was because I made film.
Stone and her husband Phil Bronstein adopted a son in 2000. Bronstein, a newspaper editor, filed for divorce in 2003 and was granted custody of their child.
“I ended up at the Mayo Clinic with extra heartbeats in my upper and lower chambers,” she said. “It broke my heart.”
In the flashing scene primal instinct is tame compared to today’s rate, Stone said.
“People are now walking around without clothes on regular TV. And you may have seen a sixteenth of a second of possible nudity from me,” she said.
People in the entertainment industry also looked down on her because she was involved in films that pushed the envelope, Stone claimed.
“I was nominated for a Golden Globe for this role, and when I went to the Golden Globes and they called my name, a few people in the room laughed,” she said. “I was so humbled. And I was like, does anyone have any idea how hard it was to play that role? And a little effort to carry this complex film that really pushes all boundaries?
Because of the episodes, Stone said she avoided playing characters with dark personalities.
“It’s cruel to play these characters,” she said. “And that’s why I don’t play them anymore.”
