Seth Rogen calls negative movie reviews “devastating” and knows people who have never recovered from them

Seth Rogen he’s had quite an interesting career as an actor and it includes a variety of different film projects and characters he’s portrayed over the years. Some of the movies he made were great and praised, while others weren’t so good. It’s the nature of business! Sometimes the movies that are made are good, sometimes they are bad.

During a recent interview on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Rogen spoke about the negative reviews written by critics and how hurtful they are to people. She calls them “devastating” and she says she knows people who have never recovered from them. He explained:

“I think if most critics knew how much it hurt the people who created the things they’re writing about, they’d guess the way they write these things. It’s devastating. I know people who honestly never recover, years, decades of injuries. It’s very personal… It’s devastating when you’re told institutionally that your self-expression was bad. It’s something people carry with them, literally, for their entire lives and I understand why. It fucking sucks.

Rogen went on to talk about his 2011 film The Green Hornet, which was not met with much critical praise, but he says the film’s good box office results helped him with that:

“For Green Hornet, the reviews were coming out and it was pretty bad. People just hated him. It seemed like something people enjoyed not really liking. But it opened to about $35 million, which was the biggest opening weekend I’d ever been associated with at that point. It worked quite well. That’s what’s good about it sometimes. Sometimes you can grasp a sense of success.

He then went on to say that he was very upset about the film The interview because it seemed like a “personal reject” for him as a producer and director of the play.

I understand what he’s saying, but he’s also a millionaire. It would gladly take some hurt feelings in exchange for financial security. Regardless, I try to stay upbeat and positive about the reviews I write. I get a lot of bullshit from people about liking everything, but I enjoy watching movies! Even if I don’t like certain movies, I try to find some things I like about them. But there have been times when a movie is so bad that it’s hard to see anything good. It just happens!

In the end, the reviews from the critics shouldn’t even matter, it all depends on the audience! Seriously, who cares what a critic says!? What do you think of Rogen’s thoughts on the negative reviews?
