Marvel Studios has revealed that a new Native American hero character will be introduced in the upcoming second season of the animated series What if…? The character’s name is Kahhori and the episode in which she appears tells the story of the Tesseract and what might have happened had it appeared in America before its colonization.

The entire episode will be completely in the Mohawk language and is informed by the history of the Akwesasne region in what is now New York state.

The story centers on the Tesseract as she “takes on a new life and a new mythology, turning a lake into a portal to the stars and guiding Kahhori, a young Mohawk woman, in a quest for her power.”

The episode was written by Ryan Small (What if…? ), and was created in close collaboration with members of the Mohawk Nation, including the historian Douglas George and Mohawk language expert Cecilia King ensure cultural authenticity.

The production team also worked with members of the Mohawk Nation to design Kahhori’s look and environment, and to help incorporate traditional Mohawk music for use in the soundtrack.

George spoke enthusiastically about the project, saying, “It tells an amazing story from a Native-Mohawk perspective that is truly unique and historic, and will give viewers a new, challenging and entertaining perspective on the first peoples of this land. The story is dramatic, the characters are fully realized and the action sequences are breathtaking. The episode is outstanding in another sense: it is made with the full cooperation of the Mohawk people from the dialogue to the ornament.

Little added, “I’ve had a wonderful writing mentor who has worked extensively with the Indigenous community in upstate New York, and I was excited to draw on that experience to build an all-original corner of the MCU with storylines for new heroes.” indigenous written from a place of respect for past generations and optimism for future ones.Kahhori, pronounced “KAH-HORTI”, is a true wolf clan name, meaning “moves the forest” or is someone who motivates those who In her debut adventure, Kahhori will have to live up to her name as she recruits powerful allies in the fight to save her people and change the course of history forever.

The episode will be directed by Bryan Andrews (What if…? ), and it will be really cool to see how this story unfolds! I’m excited about this new character!
