The series was originally ordered in the summer of 2022 with Keanu Reeves set to star and Camp Todd on board to direct. But they eventually dropped the project and it seems the production team was having trouble figuring out how to move forward.
While the show isn’t moving forward on Hulu, there are plans to shop the project at other outlets. I hope the project comes from somewhere! This is a fascinating story and will likely be a huge hit for anyone who decides to move forward with it, especially considering how popular true crime is right now.
The series “tells the true story of Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect who is quick to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. HH Holmes, the first modern serial killer in America and the man behind the infamous ‘Murder Castle’ built in the shadow of the Fair. Reeves was going to play Burnham in the film.
The series would take audiences on “a tour of murder, romance and mystery in the Golden Age”. Holmes admitted to killing 27 people, but in fact he is said to have killed more than 200 people. He built The World’s Fair Hotel, which was an inn where people could stay while visiting, and the sociopath used his charming demeanor to lure guests to his hotel, which has since become known as the crime castle. The castle included a gas chamber, a crematorium and a dissecting table where he killed his victims and stripped their skeletons to sell them for medical and scientific study. When Holmes was arrested, he told the police:
“I was born with the devil in me. I couldn’t help but be a murderer, any more than poet can help inspiration sing – I was born with ‘Evil One’ standing as my sponsor by the bed where I was introduced to the world, and he’s been with me ever since.”
Sam Shaw wrote the series and would serve as showrunner. Leonardo Dicaprio AND Martin Scorsese they were also developing a film version at one point, but remain executive producers. Before that, in 2004, Tom Cruise had acquired the rights and was looking to produce a film.
Do you hope to see the project finally realized?
