The script of the film was written by the comic creator Mike Mignola AND Golden Chris. The story is based on the comic of the same name, and in that story, Hellboy teams up with a rookie BPRD agent named Tom Ferrell, and they find themselves stranded in rural 1950s Appalachia. “There they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with an eerie connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.” The story “will expand the world of Hellboy through one of the most beloved issues of the comic series.”

Brian Taylor (Crank, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Player) is set to direct the film and has previously said he’s trying to “really do honor” to the original comics: “We started with a draft from Mike and Chris. Funny enough, a lot of what I’m doing is trying to get it even closer to the original comic than they did… A comic will never translate directly to the screen, but I’ll tell you my intent in the film is really to honor and bring the original comics to life.”

Taylor also confirmed that he’s looking into making an R-Rated version of the film, saying, “We’ve definitely discussed about, you know, it doesn’t serve anyone to do something for R for the sake of R. To say it has to be R, so we have to add A, B, and C. But this material, this source material is dark and scary and violent and adult. So to really accept that, we don’t want to have handcuffs.
