The Film Independent Spirit Awards honor the best independent storytellers and this year’s awards ceremony was hosted by comedian Hasah Minhaj. The 38th annual gala marked a first and became gender neutral in its acting categories. It was also the first year that the organizers introduced the Best Breakthrough Achievement category.

Everything everywhere at onceHe was the afternoon’s big winner with seven trophies, including best film, best director and best screenplay for Daniel Kawn and Daniel Schenert. Yeoh took home the trophy for Best Actress and Key Huy Quan for Best Supporting Actress, while Stephanie Hsu was recognized for Best Breakthrough Performance.
Television content was also recognized at this year’s Spirit Awards, with Quinta Brunson being recognized for her role in Best Lead Actress in a New Scripted Series Abbot Primary School. The sample won in the category Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series and The bear took home the Best New Script Series trophy. Ayo Edebiri won Best Supporting Performance in a New Series for The bear.
