When it was first announced Chris Pratt he had been tapped to voice Mario at Nintendo The Super Mario Bros. Movie, fans were very curious about what her voice would sound like. For years, the only voice fans knew was that funny Italian accent from the games.

Not long after that announcement, Pratt said the voice he had given the character is “unlike anything you’ve ever heard.” The producer also teased, “All I can tell you is the voice that she’s doing for us, and Mario, is phenomenal. Yeah, I can’t wait for people to hear it.”
Then when the first trailer was released, people heard the voice and it sounded exactly like Chris Pratt! There was nothing different or special or unique about it. Chris Pratt’s voice is Mario.
Well, now the film’s director, Aaron Horvath, is defending Pratt’s casting and says he’s perfect for the role. In an interview with GamesRadarHe said:
“It made perfect sense to us. He’s really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a lot of heart. The way Mario is portrayed in our film, he’s perfect for that.”
I’m sure Pratt will give a good performance, he always does a great job when voicing characters in animated films like The LEGO Movie. But it’s just not the voice fans were expecting for Mario. Producer Chris Meledandri previously said:
“When people hear Chris Pratt’s performance, the criticisms will fade, maybe not entirely – people love to voice opinions, as they should, I’m not sure if that’s the smartest defence, but as someone who is of Italian-American heritage, I feel I can make this decision without worrying about offending Italians or Italian-Americans… I think everything will be fine.”
Well, the criticisms still come, but maybe when the movie comes out they’ll fade away. The movie actually looks very funny!
Speaking of incorporating the experience of playing the game into the film, Horvath said, “When you play, if you don’t give up, Mario will succeed. So we transferred that player experience from the game to a feature that [movie] Mario would have done it.”
The film is also the protagonist Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day like Luigi, Black Jack as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key like toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson such as Kamek, e Sebastian Maniscalco like Spike.
It was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! At Cinema) from a script by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru).
The film will be released on April 7, 2023.
