The Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University announced today that Oscar-nominated director Fernando Meirelles (City of God, the two popes) will be the next Marion Knott Distinguished Artist.
Meirelles follows Asghar Farhadi (a separation), Dodge’s newest Distinguished Artist. He will spend three full days on campus (March 14-16) helping graduate and undergraduate students come up with story ideas while also talking about the production, casting and rough analysis of their films. In addition, he will participate in a live Q&A session open to the entire Chapman community.
“I clearly remember the shock and wonder of seeing city of god for the first time,” said Dodge College Dean Stephen Galloway. “It changed my perspective – and everyone else’s – of the possibilities of film. Having Fernando here will be a life-changing experience for all of us.”
It continues a relationship between Chapman and Meirelles that began last year when the director was on Dodge’s Master Class series.
At the last Masterclasses guests such as Colin Farrell (The Banshees by Inisherin), Joel Coen (No country for old men), Ke Huy Quan (Everything, everywhere, all at once), Todd Field (tar), Brendan Fraser (The whale), Damien Chazelle (the country) and Austin Butler (elvis).
| Meirelles developed his love for film while studying at the University of Sao Paulo. After producing numerous TV shows, he turned to film in 2002 city of godabout life in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, which earned him an Oscar nomination for best director.
