Creed III director Michael B. Giordano has spoken in the past about how the fight scenes in the film were inspired by anime. She said in a previous interview that he “had a huge Japanese anime influence on a lot of my fighters.”

Now he expands on that in a new interview with Polygon, and notably revealed that he took a lot of inspiration from Naruto Shippuden episode 450 and specifically mentioned Naruto and Sasuke as a reference to a punch that occurs in the fight between Adonis and Damian. He went on to say:
“Yeah, but that punch happened a couple of times in the anime. It also happened in Dragon Ball Z, between Goku and Vegeta. But for me, [the Creed III scene] it was about the relationship between two brothers, so the relationship between Naruto and Sasuke was where the inspiration for that relationship came from.
“The fight between Creed and Damian was meant to be a level-headed battle, and in an emotionally elevated place where these two men were both baring their souls to each other. The emotional level they were on, where they were coming from, the emotions between those two characters. That was the moment I leaned into that scene from Naruto.
Jordan also said that he watches anime “every day” and has had a lot of inspiration to draw from:
“I mean, I watch anime every day. It’s as if these images are imprinted in my head. So when I was in pre-production and putting together the fight choreography, it was just second nature for me to achieve it.
“There are some moments like that in there: the punch in the stomach – boom! There were moments during production where I was like, where do I instill these moments? I just have a highlight reel from my favorite anime constantly running through my head that, you know, if it makes sense and fits into the movie, I get inspired by it. You know, try this or try that. It came together naturally like that. It’s hard to explain, but yes.
He also offered examples of friendships and rivalries that helped inform the dynamic between the two main characters Creed III:
“[Ed and Alphonse from] Fullmetal Alchemist was definitely one. Goku and Vegeta [from Dragon Ball Z], Bakugo and Midoriya from My Hero Academia. These are just a few. When you watch an anime, there are all these similar tones and themes and feelings between them, it all sort of boils down to when a hero is challenged, and usually they have a best friend or rival who is the one who challenges them. Very. of ways. There are many different ways anime repeats these themes and sentiments. So for me, tapping into that was just part of me.
“These are just some of the ones I watch, but these spots are interchangeable in many different anime. And that’s what I like. They repackage these feelings, rhythms and emotions in different ways through different animation styles. I’m watching Blue Lock right now, which is fucking amazing, and it’s all about these characters’ egos, developing their skills, devouring different styles, and defeating others to evolve and grow.
So in a nutshell, Creed III it’s a live-action anime movie that Jordan really wanted to make! I love it and I’m really excited to finally see the movie!
In the film, we see Creed take on an old childhood friend, who is trying to settle a score after getting out of prison. This character’s name is Damian, and he is played by him Jonathan Major. Looks like it’s going to be one hell of an intense fight!
The synopsis of the film reads:
After dominating the boxing world, Adonis Creed (Jordan) has thrived in both career and family life. When childhood friend and former boxing prodigy, Damian (Majors), resurfaces after serving a long sentence in prison, he’s eager to prove that he deserves his chance in the ring. The face to face between former friends is more than just a fight. To settle the score, Adonis must put his future on the line to fight Damian, a fighter who has nothing to lose.
