During a recent interview with Collider, the director was asked if he would be interested in directing the film, and he said, “I would love to.” He went on to talk about how fun it was for him to make the first film and said he has ideas for the sequel as well:
“I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed that experience. It was a great experience. The whole Disney thing, as you can imagine, is such a professional outfit. Just from that perspective, it was so much fun. I would very, very gladly do it.” We’ll wait and see. We’ve been teasing some ideas for a while now, but it would be great to do that, it would be great to go back there.”
Ritchie is a great director who knows how to make super fun movies, and it was a real surprise when it was first announced that he would be directing Aladdin for Disney, but it ended up being a great movie! It is one of the studio’s best live-action remakes.
When Disney moves forward with Aladdin 2, it would be a mistake not to bring Ritchie back to direct. It’s nice to hear from the director that it was a good experience for him to work for the Mouse House.
Ritchie’s original live-action Aladdin starred Mena Massoud in the title role alongside Smith as the genius and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine. The film has grossed over $1 billion at the box office, so a sequel seems like a likely move by Disney.
