Del Toro spoke about the project, saying, “We begin the design process in two months. Animation has given us so many indelible images over the years, but in many ways the industry wants to keep it on the kids’ table. So I want to continue to push the machine into areas that demonstrate its capability.”
For those of you unfamiliar with the book, it is described as “wild, suspenseful, and intensely moving.” The story is set in post-Arthurian Britain, “the wars that once raged between Saxons and Britons have finally ceased. Axl and Beatrice, an elderly British couple, set off to visit their son, whom they haven’t seen for years. And since a strange fog has caused mass amnesia across the land, they can barely remember anything about him. As they are joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphaned protégé and an illustrious knight, Axl and Beatrice slowly begin to remember the dark and troubled past they all share.
Netflix film president Scott Stuber said in a statement, “Guillermo del Toro is a visionary filmmaker and a master of his craft. We couldn’t be more proud of the prestigious award for his Pinocchioand we are delighted to continue our creative partnership as he develops his next project with Netflix.”
Del Toro added: “The buried giant continues my animation partnership with Netflix and our pursuit of stop-motion as a means to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds. It is a great honor and greater responsibility for me to direct this screenplay that Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel.”
The stop-motion animation studio behind del Toro’s Pinocchio, ShadowMachine, will also be working on the creation of this film.
