It was not HBO’s job to end the series. That decision came from Armstrong. Head of HBO Casey Bloys she’s previously said that it’s Armstrong’s turn when the show wraps up, and it seems like the time has come.
Armstrong said: “There are a few different aspects. One, we could have said as soon as I decided, almost as we were writing it, which I think would be weird and perverse. We could have said that at the end of the season. I really like that idea, creatively, because then the audience is just able to enjoy everything as it comes, not trying to figure things out or perceive things a certain way once they know it’s the latest season. But, also, the countervailing thought is that we don’t hide the ball a lot on the show. I feel a responsibility to the public and I personally wouldn’t like the feeling of ‘Oh that’s it, guys’. That was the end.’ I wouldn’t like it in a show. I think I’d like to know it’s going to end.
He added: “Who knows the psychological reasons, but the creative ones were that it seemed really useful not to make the final, definitive decision for the ages. You know, there’s a promise in the title of Succession. I never thought she could go on forever. The end has always been a little present in my mind. Since season 2, I’ve been trying to think: is this next, or is it after, or is it after?
In season 4, “the sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to technology visionary Lukas Matsson is getting ever closer. The prospect of this seismic sale causes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will be like once the deal closes. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs a future in which their cultural and political clout is severely diminished.
The series is also starring Jeremy Forte, Sarah Snock, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun, J. Smith-Cameron, Peter Friedman, David Rasche, Fisher Stevens, Hiam Abbass, Justine Lupe, Scott Nicholson, Zoë WintersAND John Berlin.
Season 4 will air on Sunday, March 26.
