In 2024 it will be time to return once again to the small town that gave so many nightmares to children of the 90s, and again a few years ago. And is that HBO Max has officially ordered the development of ‘Welcome to Derry’, the prequel series of the remakes of ‘It’, where the origin of the small town that protects the presence of Pennywise will be told.
Through a statement, HBO Max has confirmed the development of ‘Welcome to Derry,’ and will feature Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane as the program’s showrunners. While Andy Muschietti, director of the ‘It’ remakes, and his sister Barbara, will be attached to write the story, as will Andy, who will be attached to direct many of the episodes.
For the uninitiated, ‘Welcome to Derry’ it will be a prequel series ‘Item’, which has been in the pipeline for several months now, but just received the green light to begin production on HBO Max. The story will be set several years before Pennywise appears in town to torment the Losers.
In the statement, the makers of ‘Welcome to Derry’ had a few words to say about the announcement: “As teenagers we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the hardcover broke. It is an epic story that contains multitudes beyond what we could explore in our films. We look forward to sharing the depth of Stephen’s novel with all his heart, humor, humanity and horror.”

What will the ‘Welcome to Derry’ series be about?
While no details have been provided about the prequel based on Stephen King’s ideas, it is believed that “Welcome to Derry’ will tell how Pennywise wakes up of his dream, or rather of the entity that the clown transforms into, to terrorize the little ones. This was expressed by Andy Muschietti himself, who wanted this scene for the story of ‘It: Chapter 2’.
There’s currently no cast attached to the project, so it’s unknown if Bill Skarsgard will return as Pennywise in the series. Nor has it been said whether Stephen King will participate in any way in the story, which, let’s remember, is based only on the writer’s novel, but which is divided into several stories that tell the origins of this fearsome enemy.
Currently, Andy Muschietti is finalizing the final details before ‘The Flash’ premieres, so production on ‘Welcome to Derry’ is expected to begin this year and, best-case scenario, premiere via HBO Max towards the end of 2024.
