Here’s a film Focus Features is looking forward to next awards season, and it wouldn’t be shocking if it got its world premiere at a major film festival sometime this year: Alexander Payne’s New England Prep School Comedy The remains. The Universal label just dated the pic to Nov. 10, with a longer break on Wednesday, Nov. 22 before Thanksgiving.
Deadline first told you about the Paynes movie Sideways Star Paul Giamatti as Focus gets worldwide rights for $30 million at the Toronto Film Festival.
Written by David Hemingson and directed by Payne, the title follows a cocky teacher (Giamatti) at an elite New England school who is forced to stay on campus over Christmas break to look after a handful of students who didn’t go anywhere. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them—a damaged, intelligent troublemaker (first man Dominic Sessa)—and the school’s chef (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), who has just lost a son in Vietnam. The film was shot at Deerfield Academy private school in Deerfield, MA.
surpluses was produced by Mark Johnson, Bill Block and Hemington. Chris Stinson, Tom Williams, Andrew Golov and Thom Zadra served as EPs. Focus will release the film in the United States, while Universal Pictures International will handle overseas distribution.
