It has been a few weeks since ‘The Whale’ hit theaters in Mexico and around the world, and this has caused different reactions among people who have already seen the film by A24 and Darren Aronofksy. Now, Brendan Fraser has come out again to clarify what’s going on with the allegations against him and make sure his portrayal of Charlie is as respectful as possible.

Recently, ‘The whale’ has received allegations of fat phobia, which had already begun a few months ago, when in December last year Daniel Franzese criticized Brendan Fraser for not allowing an obese and queer man to play the role of Charlie. To which Darren Aronofksy, the director of the film, and Brendan Fraser came out to defend that for many years, actors have been able to play characters with the help of makeup and prosthetics.

But in a new interview for Cinemanía, Brendan Fraser denies it ‘The whale’ be fat phobic: “I also understood how the cruelty to which they are subjected by others, and in general by their relatives and loved ones, can mark them for the rest of their lives. So I felt a moral obligation to portray Charlie with extraordinary dignity and respect.”

For Brendan Fraser, ‘The whale’ aims to change the view of overweight people, as well as touching the heart of everyone who dares to see the film. You have also said in the past that you want to save “a few more lives”, and for this you have had many months of preparation, meeting people who suffered from eating problems.

Brendan Fraser and the controversy over ‘The Whale’

Since the first screenings in cinemas, ‘The Whale’ has rained criticism on the subject, accusing her of being fat-phobic. In this regard, Fraser spoke some first words on WMagazine: “I have met people who live with eating disorders. They were candid in telling me how they got to the point in their lives where they were so heavy they were bedridden. The common denominator was that someone spoke cruelly to them when they were very young.”

“Years ago, I was visiting a temple in Bangkok, and there was a little sign that said, ‘Indeed, vengeful language is hurtful.’ I’ve often thought about it. Because there are serious consequences when our trust is challenged by others who speak recriminatingly,” said Brendan Fraser.

As Charlie, Brendan Fraser wanted “to be the voice of those who are so often ignored in our society”. ‘The Whale’ is currently in theaters and Fraser is nominated for Best Actor at the upcoming Academy Awards taking place on March 12, so we’ll have to be careful to find out who will take home the statuette.
