Mary Elizabeth Winstead is set to star next Ewan McGregor in the upcoming drama series from Showtime and Paramount+ A gentleman in Moscow. The series is an adaptation of the novel by Amor Towles.
The series “follows Count Alexander Rostov (McGregor) who, in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, discovers that his gilded past puts him on the wrong side of history. Spared immediate execution, he is banished from a Soviet court to an attic of the opulent Hotel Metropol, threatened with death if he ever sets foot outside. As the years roll by and some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold outside the hotel’s doors, Rostov’s reduced circumstances allow him to enter a much larger world of emotional discovery. As he builds a new life within the walls of the hotel, he discovers the true value of friendship, family and love.
Winstead will play the role of Anna Urbanova, described as “a glamorous, independent, self-taught film actress at the height of her fame. She uses her wit and her beauty to amaze Count Alexander Rostov. She is an enigmatic character who holds her cards very close to her chest. Reluctant to reveal her true self, Anna plays a role off-screen as well as within her. The sizzling chemistry between the Count and Anna is clear from the moment they meet at the Hotel Metropol where he has been banned from a Soviet trial, but will this true love or just the latest in a long line of roles Anna is playing ?
This will be the third project Winstead and McGregor have collaborated on. They have previously worked together on Fargo Season 3 on FX and the 2020 DC Movie Birds of prey. Oh yes, they are also married.
Ben Vanstone is writer, executive producer and showrunner of the series. Sam Miller is director and executive producer. eOne produces in association with Paramount.
Production of the limited series is now underway. It will debut on Showtime in the US and on Paramount+ in other markets around the world.
