Margo Martindale is one of the stars of cocaine bear, the dark action comedy directed by Elizabeth Banks. The story is based on true events from 1985, when an American black bear swallowed a bag full of cocaine.
Martindale is in total disbelief that she even tells EW in the film, “I never thought I’d be doing an action movie by the time I was 70, but I guess I did!”
The Emmy-winning actor plays a ranger who encounters the beast that gives the film its title.
“She’s businesslike,” Martindale said. “She is dedicated to her craft, she wants to rise in the forest world, she does everything by the book and has her sights firmly set on her goal [a character played by] Jesse Tyler Ferguson.”
Martindale was surprised at how physical she had to be during filming as she had to do her own “stunts”.
“When I read the script, I thought, well, I’m sure there’s going to be someone who does everything [the stunts] for me,” she recalls. “And when I got there, I said, ‘Are you kidding? You mean I have to go there to do that?’ [Elizabeth] said, “You read the script!” [Laughs] I had a stunt double, which was great.
cocaine bear was written by Jimmy Warden and also features Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Alden Ehrenreich, Christian Convery, Brooklynn Prince, Ray Liotta, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Aaron Holliday, Matthew Rhys, Kristofer Hivju, Hannah Hoekstra and Ayoola Smart. The film is scheduled for release on February 24.
