Since its premiere, last May 2022, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ has raised almost 1.5 billion dollars worldwide and has conquered audiences and critics, so much so that even Steven Spielberg is a declared fan. At the Academy Award Nominees Dinner hosted annually by the American Film Academy, a beautiful moment between the director of ‘The Fabelmans’ and ‘Top Gun’ star Tom Cruise was caught on camera and went viral. And is that in addition to being the center of attention of the night, Cruise had a precious moment when Spielberg told him: “You saved Hollywood’s ass and you may have saved theatrical distribution, seriously. ‘Maverick’ may have saved the entire film industry.” Oh.

At the gala of the Directors Guild Awards which was held this Saturday, February 18, at the invitation of Deadline, Joseph Kosinski, director of ‘Maverick’, explained how he lived that moment and what his reaction was: “[Fue] quite surreal for many obvious reasons”Kosinsky said, “I grew up watching Steven’s movies, they’re such an inspiration to me. Watching him and Tom talk about this movie, it was really amazing.”

What success the late ‘Idols of the Air’ sequel achieved would not have been achieved if it came out in the middle of a pandemic, much less if it came out on streaming, something Kosinski feels rewarded for after having to wait until two years to be able to distribute your film in commercial theaters: “I knew we made this film to be seen on the big screen and Releasing him otherwise simply wouldn’t have done him justice. That’s what kept us all there while we waited and thank God we made it because I think the timing was perfect and the results were spectacular.”

Mind you, just as the film is doing, award ceremonies in general still seem reluctant to give the action genre the recognition it deserves. At the Oscars, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ indeed slipped into the categories of best film and best adapted screenplay (where sequels go), but doesn’t appear in the directing or acting sections, and isn’t even a favorite part in any pool. At DGA, Kosinski was nominated, but the award was won by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for “Everything at Once Everywhere”.

your next project

After ‘Maverick’, Kosinski is already working on his next project: a film about a retired Formula 1 driver who decides to return to racing. Still untitled, it will star Brad Pitt and Lewis Hamilton from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger and theoretically arrive in the second half of 2023. Enthused, Kosinski told Deadline: “I can’t wait to show people what’s behind the scenes. We’ll be driving around tracks in real cars and try to apply everything I learned in ‘Top Gun’ to Formula One. It’s going to be fun.”
