Sundance review: DIVINITY is a mad crazy dream of a movie starring Scott Bakula, Stephen Dorff and Bella Thorne

Divinity it was one of the last movies I saw at Sundance, and I don’t know if it’s because I was going through cinematic fatigue from watching so many movies or because I was insanely tired. But this movie made me feel like I was trapped in a fever dream and didn’t know what the hell was going on. But I also dug it.

What I do know is that the sci-fi movie was weird as hell and took me on an insanely wacky journey with some wacky and bizarre characters. The film has a very retro feel to it and the visuals were really cool and interesting. One thing I can say for sure, this is a wildly unique and original film.

Now, there’s a synopsis for the film, but it doesn’t begin to capture the craziness of the story. “Set in an otherworldly human existence, scientist Sterling Pierce has dedicated his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of an innovative serum called ‘Divinity’. Jaxxon Pierce, his son, now controls and fulfills the dream once benevolent by his father. Society on this arid planet has been completely perverted by the supremacy of drugs, the true origins of which are shrouded in mystery. Two mysterious brothers arrive with a plan to kidnap the tycoon, and with the help of a seductive woman named Nikita, will be set on a path that hurtles towards true immortality.

While the movie is a live-action movie, one of my favorite parts was towards the end where there’s a climactic fight sequence and it’s all done in stop-motion animation, Ray Harryhousen-style, at least it looked stop-motion to me. motion! Regardless, I liked the style of that action scene, it was pretty cool! It was fierce yet charming, and I was on board for the ride with what they were doing!

The film has an interesting cast which includes Stephen Dorf, Moses Arias, Jason Genao, Emily Willis, Bella Thorne, Karrueche TradAND Scott Bacula in his weirdest movie role ever!

The film was written and directed by Eddie Alcazar and the description says it “dazzles with this uncompromising vision that propels a retro sci-fi style forward into a grotesque, jaw-dropping future. Alcazar leads a skilled team of creative collaborators to build this world, and together they conjure a bold illuminated black and white wonder.” with untold mysteries hidden in the shadows.

This is a sci-fi art film and will not be easily marketable to audiences and will not be a commercial success. But in time it will find its audience and will likely have a solid cult following one day.
