Mike Mignola has a Hell boy spin-off comic series coming to Dark Horse Comics titled Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea. The four-issue series was written by Mignola, and was illustrated by Jesse Lonerganand we’ve got some story details and pictures to share with you today!
The supernatural miniseries will follow “protagonist Miss Truesdale, one of the last followers of the secret society known as the Heliopic Brotherhood of Ra. Gifted with a vision from the leader of the Brotherhood, Truesdale discovers that her life in Victorian London is connected to ancient Hyperborea and the life of a young gladiator there, giving her the opportunity to alter her past and change her future.
Jesse Lonergan shared a statement: “When Mike asked me if I’d be interested in doing anything in the Hellboy universe, it felt a bit like a dream. He’s one of the artists whose work I revisit the most, and there have been times when I’ve worked on something and wondered, ‘How would Mignola do that?’ And then getting to do a story that introduces a new character, expands the lore, and has gladiators and Victorian spiritualists and lizards — that was really fun.
Mignola added, “I fell in love with Jesse’s stuff the moment I stumbled across it, but it took me a long time to figure out how we could work together. His storytelling is so great but incredibly unique and I’m such a control freak when it comes to how to pace a story – I didn’t want to tie his hands with the way I structure things. But he’s so good…”
He continued, saying, “I finally came up with the idea of Miss Truesdale (strange, even to me) and I couldn’t think of anyone better to draw her. We met, we talked and I think we decided on a way to collaborate. It meant writing a storyline that was tight in places and very, very loose in others,” Mignola continued. “I had to trust Jesse to work his magic – and it’s hard for me to really trust an artist I’ve never worked with, even one as good as Jesse – but I did and he did what he does and I couldn’t be happier with the results.I think this ends up being one of the more unique extensions of the Hell boy Universe, and after nearly thirty years (and some very strange stories) that’s saying something.
It looks and sounds like a fun horror comic series and I can’t wait to read it! I’m ready for any story set in the Hellboy universe!
Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea will be released on May 17, 2023.
