James Cameron crowns Spanish box office with ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’ and ‘Titanic’ revival

Has it ever happened that the director himself takes not only the first place at the box office, but also the second? Such a milestone belongs only to someone like James Cameron. The director is the absolute king of the Spanish box office thanks to the unbeatable ‘Avatar: The sense of water’ and the revival of ‘Titanic’ for its 25th anniversary.

The sequel to ‘Avatar’ holds the number 1 for the ninth consecutive week. Of course, it is the first time that the proceeds have dropped below one million euros. As reported by Comscore, the film earned €727,197 at the box office, 33% less than the previous week, still impressive performance for the time it was on the bill. Its average per screen is still over a thousand euros. In total it accumulates 47.95 million euros and over 6.6 million viewers.

There was a surprise on Friday, but everything remained at Cameron’s house because it was ‘Titanic’ which, 25 years after its original premiere, returned to the top of the charts. The joy was short-lived as ‘Avatar 2’ crowned the box office again on Saturday. Similarly, the story of the ship of dreams manages to be the highest-grossing (re)release of the week with €461,824 and an average of €1,592 per screen, the best of the week. Less than 400,000 euros remains behind the fourth highest-grossing film in history in our country, ‘The Impossible’.

Kids, families and animation lovers just can’t get enough of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. In its eighth week, it drops very little, 18% compared to the previous week. Add €448,496 to a total that already exceeds €9.5 million. A huge success for DreamWorks that perhaps reaches ‘Tadeo Jones 3: The Emerald Table’, but will fail to exceed 20.7 million for ‘Minions: The Origin of Gru’ (which was frankly complicated).

Steven Spielberg has to settle for fourth place for “The Fabelmans”. The filmmaker’s semi-autobiographical film debuts in Italy with €436,413 at the box office and an average per screen of 1,440 euros, better than that of ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’. The Oscar nominations have not yet been overly noticed, but in this aspect it has a lot of competition.

‘La niña de la comunion’ opens in fifth position with 431,077 euros at the box office and an average of 1,373 euros per screen. That’s nearly half of what ‘M3GAN’ raised in its first weekend just over a month ago. It’s a pretty low-key start for a horror film, and “Scream VI” arrives in less than a month, so it should make the most of the next few days, but it’s sparking few conversations. Next in the standings is ‘El piloto’, which stays outside the top 5 with a gross of 298,656 in its first weekend.

‘As bestas’ had a dream weekend. Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s film was crowned as the big winner of Goya night on Saturday, winning Best Picture, among others. The “Goyas effect” is noticeable, with 131% more takings than the previous weekend, also favored by the increase in the number of cinemas. The film added €185,355 to a total of €4.67 million and took eighth position.

Awards season continues this week with the theatrical release of ‘Ellas hablando’, which features an outrageous cast led by Rooney Mara and Frances McDormand, and which is nominated for an Oscar for best picture. Also arriving in theaters is ‘The Triangle of Sadness’, the Swedish film nominated for an Oscar for best film, best director and best original screenplay. But the week’s most powerful premiere is the start of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”
