Over the years and films, if we are clear about “Fast & Furious”, it is that Vin Diesel is not just another actor in the saga, he is committed to the franchise like no other and has a lot of weight when it comes to deciding the course which is followed in each delivery. Even if the director or writers are happy with some specific aspect of the film, if Diesel is not convinced, it should be revised. And for this from eCartelera we took advantage of our interview with Louis Leterrier, director of ‘Fast & Furious X’to find out what it’s really like to work with Diesel.

Even if there are those who think that a filmmaker new to the saga, as in the case of Leterrier, could be intimidated by an actor whose words about the film go in droves, the director explains that he is very happy with the way Diesel works and how they got along: “He works tirelessly all the time and so do I. I loved him. Everyone had warned me which is very intense, something to which I have responded by assuring that it has found its match”. This connection between the two means they stayed together on many occasions to work overtime to polish the film to the max: “At the end of the day when shooting was done, after thanking the crew and sending everyone home, I’d stop by my trailer just to wash my hands and then go straight to hers. We spent three or four hours every night, every weekend, working and refining, rewriting some dialogue, revising… We made the film better by working together.”
As we already know, Leterrier has joined the project to replace Justin Lin, who stepped down as director of the project with filming already underway. The new director took over with production underway and without a clear idea of what was going on, so it’s no surprise that he reveals that the extra nights working with Diesel were key to the adaptation: “It also helped me because I had no preparation, I hadn’t prepared this film. So that was my preparation: reviewing the next day’s scenes every night, editing on set… We were in sync from the moment we met and we didn’t stop, I lost my voice yesterday being on the phone with him until midnight.”
With such a collaborative approach, Leterrier implies that little of what is in the script is definitive. Every movie idea is subject to change if it’s for the better: “Everything evolves. If there is a way to improve a scene, a character, a fight or a story, we will try to find it.”
A good friendship
Many extra hours and days of work can make them very tired of each other or become thick and thin. In this case, Leterrier admits that both have established a good relationship, both professional and friendly: “We are like two best friends, we love each other very much. We spend weekends together, our families get along very well. It’s very nice, I met my brother and I love him.”
Barring possible spin-offs or in the absence of unrevealed secrets, with “Fast & Furious 10” we enter the final stretch of a saga that began in 2001. This installment would be the penultimate installment of the franchise, which will tie directly into ‘Fast & Furious 11’, the latest ‘Fast & Furious’ film.
* ‘Fast & Furious X’ can be viewed alone At the cinema from May 19th.
