Right now, the movie industry is infested with superhero movies almost every month. Marvel and DC Comics, as well as Amazon with ‘The Boys’, have monopolized the land of this genre, however there are other titles that do not necessarily have a reference in the ninth art. Like that of these titles that didn’t try to be based on well-known comics, but featured an original story.

One of best superhero movies not based on any comics is ‘Darkman’, an original story by Sam Raimi, the same director of the ‘Spiderman’ trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. Starring Liam Neeson and Frances McDormand, the story follows a scientist who is attacked by a mobster, leaving him deformed and nearly dead, but in healing him she gains powers to avenge him. Just as Marvel and DC built their cinematic universe empires, director M. Night Shyamalan created his with a trilogy of superhero movies not based on anything. ‘The Unprotected’ followed by ‘Split’ and ‘Glass’ starring Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis and James McAvoy follows three supermen from completely different origins. Available on Star+.

DreamWorks also wanted a piece of the pie the genre was having, and released ‘Megamente’ in 2010, a superhero animated film featuring voices from the likes of Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Ben Stiller, Brad Pitt and Tina Fey. One of the most remarkable and original films of the genre about a villain who loses the meaning of his existence without a hero to defeat. Available on Netflix.

super school of heroes

With the rise represented by films like ‘Spiderman’ or ‘X-Men’, Disney also wanted to launch its own universe with ‘Superschool of Heroes’, a story that showed that it was not necessary to rely on a comic to think of a new wager. The story was created by the makers of ‘Kim Possible’, and it was a big hit among the audience at the time. Available on Disney+.

The Incredibles

Now that they had settled down and the competition was really stiff, Disney pulled their card with ‘The Incredibles’, an animated superhero film, which had some elements of ‘Watchmen’, the acclaimed comic by Alan Moore. In this case, a family of heroes must defend their lives by facing an enemy called Syndrome. Available on Disney+.

James Gunn proved that he is a lover of comics and superheroes with ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. And the greatest tribute to him was in ‘Super’, a film starring Rainn Wilson in which a powerless hero armed only with a wrench must take revenge for abandoning his wife.
