EXCLUSIVE: Good news for the Los Angeles art house scene: Landmark Theaters is acquiring AMC’s Sunset 5 at 8000 W Sunset Boulevard. Exhibitor Cohen Media Group takes over the venue in June. Until then, Sunset 5 will remain open and operated by AMC.
The news comes after the Landmark had to close its crown jewel location on Pico Boulevard last May due to the expiration of its lease and Google’s acquisition of that section of the property.
Once Landmark moves into Sunset 5, new seating and various amenities will be added as the location remains open for business. Landmark signed a 10-year lease for the venue negotiated and secured by Michael Fant, Landmark’s EVP of Real Estate, and Kimco Realty on behalf of the Sunset Theater owner.
Dating back to Sundance Cinemas, the venue has long been a multiplex for filmmaker Q&A, private screenings and more.
“This theater has been a mainstay of the independent cinema scene for over 30 years and is the latest in several strategic acquisitions by Landmark Theatres,” said Kevin Holloway, President of Landmark Theatres. “The Los Angeles market is ripe for film fans and creatives, so we are excited to expand our footprint with the Sunset location. We look forward to not only providing service, but also working with the community to soon create a unique curated programming and entertainment experience.”

In the Los Angeles area, Landmark also operates the Historic Nuart Theater in West Los Angeles, the newly renovated Landmark Westwood venues in Westwood Village, and Landmark Pasadena. Landmark Theaters was added to the Cohen Media Group in 2018. Founded in 2008 by Charles S. Cohen, CMG is an independent theatrical exhibition, distribution and production company with multiple Academy Award nominations and a Best Foreign Language Film Award The seller.
