Hugh Hudson, Oscar-nominated British director for ‘Chariots of Fire’He died at the age of 86. His family confirmed the sad news via the BBC.

Inside publication of the family can be read: “Hugh Hudson, aged 86, dear father and husband, passed away at Charing Cross Hospital on 10 February after a short illness. He is survived by his wife Maryam, son Thomas and first wife Sue”.

Hudson made his directorial debut in a big way with ‘Chariots of Fire’. His first film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and earned him a Best Director nomination. (an award that withstood him and went to Warren Beatty for ‘Reds’), out of seven in total. The London-based director began his career directing documentaries and TV commercials. His first film job was as a second unit director on Alan Parker’s ‘Midnight Express’.

His later works include ‘Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, King of the Apes’ (which received three Oscar nominations), ‘Revolution’, with Al Pacino, ‘New Rebels’, a segment of the collective ‘Lumière and Company’ and ‘I Dreamed of Africa’, with Kim Basinger. After the latter came out in 2000, Hudson retired, momentarily returning behind the cameras in 2016.

His latest job was in Spain

After 15 years without directing a film, Hudson returned to cinema in 2016 with ‘Altamira’, his latest directorial effort. The film, a French-Spanish co-production shot in English, narrates the discovery and controversy over the authenticity of the cave paintings of Altamira, and stars Antonio Banderas and Golshifteh Farahani. Its shooting took place in Cantabria between 2014 and 2015 and, despite an investment of 10 million euros, it did not do well at the Spanish box office.
