Tommy assures Kathleen that there is already a perimeter around the city, so sooner or later they will find Henry and Sam. Finding Henry is Kathleen’s top priority, for better or for worse. As she walks away, she orders Tommy to burn the informants’ bodies only when she is done killing them.

This Edelstein is the doctor Kathleen killed in episode 4. Before he was captured, he met Henry and Sam, who is deaf. With 11 days of food at the time, Henry believed he could come up with a solid plan to get Edelstein out of town when they ran out. When Edelstein leaves and doesn’t return after more than a day, Henry knows it’s time to go with Sam as they are out of food.

Before leaving, Henry paints an orange streak across Sam’s eyes. It’s time for Sam to be brave, like a superhero. On the way out, Henry watches Joel win the shootout after crashing Bill’s truck. Henry tracks down Joel (Pedro Pasqual) and Eli (Bella Ramsey) at night. Though he has them at gunpoint, Henry doesn’t want to hurt Joel and Ellie.

Henry and Kathleen’s history is revealed

Henry says he is “the most wanted man in Kansas City”. He tells Joel that he knows the city and can help them. Henry feels like Joel is the man to watch after watching him kill those men. Henry points out that they have to use the maintenance tunnels to avoid detection. He warns Joel that Phaedra brought the infected underground 15 years ago, but now the tunnels are presumably clean. They all go down together. It’s dark and silent. They come across an abandoned daycare that has been set up after the initial outbreak.

During a heart-to-heart talk, Henry reveals the truth to Joel. He’s already killed someone, someone he calls a “great man.” It all happened because Sam got leukemia. There was one drug that worked, but it was from FEDRA. To get the drug, he had to give Phaedra something big. He killed the leader of the resistance movement, who was also Kathleen’s brother.

a fatal blow

As they walk down the street on the outskirts of the city, shots are heard. Joel leaves Ellie, Henry and Sam behind to track down the killer. Joel easily defeats the boy, but Kathleen and her men are on their way. Joel continues shooting at the vehicles moving towards them and manages to shoot one of the truckers. The car crashes and catches fire.

Kathleen gets out of the car and asks Henry to show himself. Henry tells him he will give up if he lets the children go. Kathleen refuses to negotiate. She tells Henry that maybe Sam just had to “die”. Children always die, she says. She adds, “This is what happens when she fucks with destiny.” Henry orders Ellie to take Sam and run.

Henry comes out from behind a car to confront Kathleen. “It ends the way it ends,” she tells Henry before pointing the gun at him. Suddenly, the burning car falls into a hole. A swarm of infected emerges and begins attacking. Henry and Sam run, while Ellie gets in the car. A fan comes out of the hole and heads towards Kathleen and Tommy. Tommy sacrifices himself for Kathleen as she escapes.
