EXCLUSIVE: A 39-page short story about a haunted house by first-time author Victor Sweetser has caused quite a stir, with five bids for film rights and more, including some of the big names in the genre.
the resident went on the market yesterday and the response was quick. This is the story of a 100-year-old Victorian house that is offered for free with the proviso that the new owner must put it on a plank bed and move it from the lot it sits on. The story cleverly begins with lyrics between a man and a woman who can’t get over their happiness at being chosen to take over the house. Of course, we learn that there is no such thing as a free house.
The narrator is a teenager named Chloe who lives in the town where the house is moved to. She and her boyfriend Mason are disappointed that it is dumped on The Shole, her nickname for the empty piece of shit where the neighborhood kids go to drink, smoke and lose their virginity. They decide to explore the structure before the homeowners move in.
In a yarn consisting of one part poltergeist Mixed up with Stephen King, they discover that the house is haunted and the supernatural inhabitant is unleashed on members of his new neighborhood, with dire consequences. It’s going to be a full on scare fest.
No one involved has commented, but that’s what I heard. Verve is leading the auction, with Scott Glassgold producing. I’ve heard that Point Gray’s Zach Cregger, Lindsay Beer, Neal Moritz, Gary Dauberman, Walter Hamada, and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are also close to producer offers. There can be up to nine bids before they are sorted. Stay tuned.
