Idris Elba explains why he no longer describes himself as a “black actor”.

Idris Elba has stopped referring to himself as a “black actor,” claiming the description “puts me in a box.”

Speaking to Esquire UK in the Spring issue, Elba said he had come to a realization and was determined to do something about it, even if it was just a small gesture.

“We have to grow. We must. Our skin is just that: it’s just skin,” he said in the interview. Acknowledging that he might be “the first to look like me and do something specific,” he insisted, “and that’s good to go as part of my legacy.” Along with that, other people, black kids, but also white kids who grew up in the circumstances I grew up in, can see that there was a boy from Canning Town who did what I do. It can be done.”

Elba promotes his upcoming Netflix movie, Luther: The Fallen Sunwhich opens in theaters on February 24th and on Netflix on March 10th.
