At a time when Brendan Fraser was at the peak of his career, at least in terms of popularity, superhero movies seemed like a logical step into his future. Because of this, it didn’t take long to get a film started in which Superman was played by the actor from ‘The Mummy’, and the director would be none other than JJ Abrams heading up the project.
In a recent interview for Howard Stern’s podcast, Brendan Fraser revealed he was going to be Superman. Had he come true, the DC Extended Universe would not have been as it is known today, and Henry Cavill may never have appeared as Clark Kent on the big screen. The ‘The Mummy’ actor reveals what the trial was like in those years.
It was around the beginning of the year 2000 when Brendan Fraser auditioned for the role of Superman, in a film that was to be directed by JJ. Abrams, the same person responsible for “Stars Wars: The Force Awakenings”. “There were six or seven guys in 2022 or 2003. Obviously it was an incredible opportunity that could change your life, but I had to grapple with the idea of ’Okay, imagine if they give you the job to be the Man of Steel, will be engraved on your grave. You will always be remembered as the Man of Steel.”
Of course, Brendan Fraser didn’t want to be remembered as Superman all his life and decided to move on. Unfortunately for the project, the studio canceled all Abrams plans by not casting Fraser in the lead role. Eventually the movie became ‘Superman Returns’ with Brandon Routh as the lead.

“Superman: Flyby”, Brendan Fraser’s Man of Steel
The story of ‘Superman: Fly over’ with Brendan Fraser he would talk about the origins of the Kyrptonian: “I felt disappointed, I knew it was an incredible opportunity and it didn’t materialise. It wasn’t done because there were some issues with the studio and maybe with my audition… I felt like they noticed I was there 98 percent,” the actor said.
Fraser also mentions that others who auditioned for the role included ‘Fast and Furious’ star Paul Walker, among many others. Over time, Brendan returned to superhero cinema with ‘Doom Patrol’ for HBO Max, as well as the canceled ‘Batgirl’ starring Leslie Grace.
Either way, it would have been interesting to see Brendan Fraser as Superman at the height of his career. But whatever, he didn’t, and his career is peaking again with “The Whale,” for which he was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars.
