On the last day of January, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new heads of DC Studios, were pleased to reveal their long-awaited plans for the future of the company. And when it came to directing, Gunn says he had the responsibility of deciding what to do with ‘The Batman 2’ and ‘Joker 2’ since he had the development of these franchises under his control.
On his Twitter account, the director of ‘The Suicide Squad’ dedicated himself to denying or confirming some rumors that are circulating on social networks. In this regard, a fan questioned his position within the company, as it was believed that the new DC administrators were only in charge of the EUDC, and nothing more. But that’s not true, because also James Gunn could have canceled ‘Batman 2’ AND ‘joker 2’.
Some fans believe that the decisions on the Todd Phillips and Matt Reeves universes rest with David Zaslav, executive director of Warner Bros. Discovery, but that’s not true: “Many people think that’s true, due to early (incorrect) reports), But all DC titles are under our control” said James Gunn in response to the dangers of “The Batman” and “Joker”.
In other words, the director denies reports of his null control over these projects, implying that he was able to cancel ‘Batman 2’ AND ‘joker 2’ sometimesbut decided not to. Especially when a wave of cancellations at DC, like that of “Batgirl” on HBO Max, ended some corporate projects, in favor of having a plan with original titles and sticking to the long-term plan.

‘The Batman 2’ and ‘Joker 2’ will debut at DC Elseworlds
All of the above has led to the creation of DC Elseworlds, alternative realities to everything that will happen in the new DC Universe in the next 10 years, and which will in no way connect with it. The announced projects that are part of this universe are ‘The Batman – Part II’ with Robert Pattinson and ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.
But also part of DC’s Elseworlds is JJ Abrams’ Superman, which has been confirmed to still be in development, and will feature African descendant Clark Kent for the first time. At the moment this project does not have a release date, nor more details about it, but more information is expected to be revealed in the coming months.
Now, ‘The Batman 2’ and ‘Joker 2’ already have a release date. The Matt Reeves film with Robert Pattinson will arrive on October 3, 2025. While the film directed by Todd Phillips with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga will arrive in theaters exactly one year earlier, on October 4, 2025.
