‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’: Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. Negotiate Their Return to the Saga

After the return of the “Scream” saga, Sony Pictures was inspired to start their own slasher franchise, starting in new sequel to ‘I know what you did last summer’.

Sources confirm to Deadline that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson would be tapped to direct the film’s sequel and so on would you talk to Jennifer Love Hewitt (‘Ghost Whisperer’) and Freddie Prinze Jr. (‘Scooby-Doo’) so that they were Julie and Ray again, their characters in the 1997 film. Also, they state that Neal H. Moritz would be the producer and Leah McKendrick the screenwriter.

Despite Amazon unsuccessfully pitching a series inspired by the original idea for the film in 2021, Robinson and McKendrick pitched their plan to Sony executives last fall. Following the line marked by films like ‘Scream’ or ‘Creed. The Legend of Rocky’where, instead of relaunching a new story based on the first one, the actors from the original film are chosen to continue the story along with new faces who can then continue the saga.

The original film told the story of four friends who began being hunted by a hook-wielding killer after agreeing to keep what they had been doing a secret one summer night. Two years after that premiere, Mandalay Vision produced the sequel ‘I still know what you did last summer’, in which Julie and Ray were once again haunted by the killer. Finally, after managing to survive, the killer sneaks into the protagonists’ house and hints that he is about to end his life.

Strokes of Robinson and Mckendrick

Much director and screenwriter are having success in their latest projects. Robinson recently directed “Revenge Now” for Netflix, where he managed to bring back memories of films from the late 90s such as “Cruel Intentions”. In addition, she also co-wrote ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ and was a production consultant on ‘Hawkeye’. On the other hand, Mckendrick wrote, produced and starred in ‘MFA’ alongside Francesca Eastwood, and has previously worked with Sony on ‘The Blacklist’ series.
