Peter Safran says shelving BATGIRL was the right decision: ‘It would have hurt DC’

Six months ago, Warner Bros. revealed that their feature film Bad girl, which had been completed, was being pulled from its release, never to see the light of day. Fans were quite excited about this movie, especially for the prospect of seeing it Michael Keaton come back as Batman.

It seemed like a really strange decision in an age where releasing movies on streaming platforms like DC’s home of HBO is completely normal and fans would be happy to watch it from home. But new DC Studios bosses are now defending the move, with Peter Safran said:

“Batgirl is a character that we will inevitably include in our story. On the Batgirl front, this isn’t about the end of the film’s cancellation process. I’ve seen the movie and there are a lot of incredibly talented people in front of and behind the camera in that movie. But that film was not distributable, and sometimes it happens. That film was not distributable. I think for real [president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David] Zaslav and the team made a very bold and courageous decision to cancel it because it would hurt DC. He would have harmed those people involved.

He continued:

“I think they’ve really come out to support DC. The characters, the story, the quality of it all. I spoke to Adile [El Arbi] AND Billall [Fallah] – the directors – last week we were chatting. We’d like to be in business with all those people. Christina Hodson Written. Some people are already back in business with us. As I said, a lot of talented people were involved, but the film was not released. It would not have been able to compete in the theatrical market; it was built for the small screen. So again, I think it wasn’t an easy decision, but they made the right decision and shelved it.

I wonder what made the movie so bad. I mean, DC movies generally range from great to downright awful, so I believe them, but it’s sad that they made it all and no one was able to give them pointers to fix it while they were working on it. Seems like a real waste of time and talent. But hopefully one day the story of Batgirl will be told soon.
