The Last of Us Episode 4 begins with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) trying to practice using his weapon without Joel (Pedro Pasqual) knowing this. This will come into play later in the episode. Ellie and Joel continue their journey west, stopping for the night. They eat 20-year-old Chef Boyardee’s dumplings, and Ellie has never heard of this culinary delight before.
The next morning, Ellie notices an unpleasant smell. Nothing is rotting. It’s just coffee. She tells Joel the coffee “smells like burnt shit”. The audacity!

When they get back on the road, Ellie asks Joel about Tommy. Joel says his brother is a “carpenter” and always dreamed of being a hero. Prior to the outbreak, Tommy served in Desert Storm. After the outbreak, Tommy convinced Joel to join a group. That’s where they met Tess. Eventually Tommy met Marlene, who convinced him to join the Fireflies. Joel calls Tommy and the Fireflies “delusional”. Apparently Tommy left the fireflies and now Joel has to go find him.
Joel and Ellie start driving through an abandoned town when someone drops a cinder block on their truck. A young man begs them to stop. Others suddenly start shooting at the truck. More shots are fired after Joel and Ellie clash. A man attacks Joel and begins to strangle him. Joel is about to die when Ellie shoots the man to save Joel.
The young man, whose name is Brian, immediately backs down. He breaks down in tears and begs them to take him to his mother. Joel takes the gun from Ellie. Joel prepares to shoot Brian when Brian throws the knife at him. Joel orders Ellie to go behind the wall so she can’t see what she’s about to do. Ellie never hears a shot, but Brian suddenly stops crying. He wipes a few tears from his eyes.
Elsewhere, a woman named Kathleen, played by yellow jackets star Melanie Lynskey, interrogates a doctor in a cell. He thinks this doctor knows where this mysterious Henry is. “This has gone too far,” says the doctor. He swears he never told “them” anything about Kathleen’s brother. Kathleen and Henry are clearly having problems. She’s still in town and she’s looking for him.

Kathleen’s interrogation is interrupted by car horns outside. She thinks Henry is responsible for what happened to Brian. “This is Henry’s job,” she says. Kathleen goes back inside and shoots the doctor. She wants to find all collaborators and kill them. Meanwhile, Joel and Ellie try to keep a low profile. Joel knows time is running out.
Joel takes a moment to ask Ellie if she’s okay. He clearly feels terrible that she has to resort to violence to protect him. “I know what it’s like the first time you hurt someone like that,” he says. He wished she didn’t have to save him. “I’m sorry,” he says to Ellie. She wipes more tears from her eyes. “It wasn’t my first time,” she admits. As a result of what happened, Joel teaches Ellie how to use a weapon properly.
Kathleen sees what appears to be Henry’s hideout. There are cans of food and drawings. She knows Henry won’t let Sam starve. She orders the guard to secure the supplies. Henry and Sam can’t be far away. The guard then takes Kathleen to another room on the ground floor. The ground cracks and begins to move. Kathleen says to seal the building for now. She will deal with it later.

Ellie and Joel start moving again. They climb several flights of stairs to find safety. She asks if she has killed innocent people before. Joel pauses and doesn’t answer. They find a place to sleep for the night. This time he asks her when he’s said he’s hurt people before. “I don’t want to talk about it,” Ellie says quietly. Joel tells her he doesn’t have to, but he says it’s not fair that he should at his age. Ellie makes a joke to lighten the mood. They both laugh.
They fall asleep, but Ellie wakes Joel in the middle of the night. They’re holding her at gunpoint. When she turns around, a guy with red eye paint has a gun pointed at him. The boy motions Joel to shut up.
