The series Cobra Kai has been a successful phenomenon ever since it tamely debuted on YouTube. THE Karate Kid the spinoff hit hard, with most fans agreeing that it was a better series than anyone had expected, and it was so surprisingly great compared to the spinoffs and sequel series in other franchises that we were given previously. The Sony-produced show ran for five seasons and is about to conclude its story with a sixth and final season on Netflix. The show’s creators have always talked that the series could lead to any number of spinoffs, but we haven’t heard any finality yet.
Now president of Sony Pictures Television Studios Catherine Pope she sat down with Deadline to talk about the future of the series and teased:
They have some ideas in terms of expansion Cobra Kai and coming to the Karate Kid legacy in different ways. But yeah, the movie is also a good example. It’s all of that. I think we’ve all learned that these worlds can exist together and they can feel cohesive and they can feel additive, especially to fans, and they feel like big, big worlds that exist on many different levels, they don’t necessarily all exist in the same plane.
The public is so savvy now and accepting more layers of the IP then the Cobra Kai the universe lives on, that’s for sure.
The Karate Kid movie he’s referring to was announced last year and its plot is still completely under wraps. We don’t know how or if it’s connected to the Cobra Kai universe, but it seems silly not to. There is such a fan base for that show, it would be great to see it transferred to the big screen. But whatever they do, I trust the makers, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz AND Hayden Schlossberg do good for the fans. They made this series as a love letter and as huge fans themselves, so they’re only going forward to do this franchise justice, and I’m excited to see what they come up with.
