Goya 2023: who will win in the categories of best new actor and new actress?

Spanish cinema is just a week away from dressing up to celebrate the 37th edition of the Goya Awards. Now that the race is coming to a close, it’s time to see the nominees, meet the favourites, see which ones have a chance to surprise and most importantly recognize the great talent among the nominees. Why, Like every year, Spanish cinema boasts talent and a host of good titleswho well deserve to have achieved the most important awards in the sector.

But it’s time to make a prediction. It is true that the race for the Goyas is less extensive than, for example, the race for the Oscars, being more similar to the prizes of neighboring countries such as the César or the David di Donatello. Although of course thanks to Forqué, Feroz, medals from the Círculo de Escritores Cinematográficos and Gaudí, there are antechambers that make the race more excitingHowever, its results are not that constraining, making it very difficult to predict the winner.

Goya 2023: who will win in the categories of best new actor and new actress?

And precisely the most difficult category is that of the best new actor and the best new actress, as this is a single section of the Goya, since there are neither Forqué nor Feroz nor Gaudí nor CEC medals, which makes his career more exciting. This award recognizes both the strong performance of a young (or seasoned) talent making its screen debut, and the performance of a professional who, despite having a long career in theater or television, has had a more subdued time in film until at the moment.

A difficult category to predict

Among the nominated shows There is a young man who belongs to a family of peach farmers, a woman who sees how her family’s way of life is in danger of being lost, a man who sees how the lands that belonged to his clan are turning into an energy field .wind power, a young village girl humiliated by her weight, a 30-year-old father who finds himself overwhelmed, a teenager trying to escape a fateful fate, a boy who ends up learning a life lesson through his stepfather, a college student who rediscovers his sexuality, a young man who denies being classified as a victim and a girl with an obsessive desire to care for others.

Goya 2023: best actor and new actress analysis

1 Albert Bosch, for ‘Alcarràs’
Albert Bosch, for 'Alcarràs'

In favor: He is one of the youngest candidates in the category and the revelation prizes are usually awarded to the most rookies (with honorable exceptions, of course). He has in his favor belong to the winner of the brand new Golden Bear winner of Berlin and representative at the Oscars of Spain. Bosch is also vying for the CEC medal as best newcomer and the winner will be announced on 6 February, who will start with an advantage in a category that, for the moment, is still very open. He was also nominated for the Gaudí Prize for best revealing performance.

Against: It’s a very open category and ‘Alcarràs’ has the drawback that, a priori, it doesn’t seem to create a great dragging effect, which seems to happen with ‘Cinco lobitos’, which has a candidate among the five, Mikel Bustamante . On the other hand, Carla Simón’s film has the disadvantage of having two candidates, since Bosch is in competition with Jordi Pujol Dolcet, which could lead to split votes.

2 Anna Otín, for ‘Alcarràs’
Anna Otín, for 'Alcarràs'

In favor: Like Albert Bosch and Jordi Pujol Dolcet in the men’s category, Anna Otín could win the prize thanks to her participation in ‘Alcarràs’. That Golden Bear can still influence the decision of academics, as happened with Bruna Cusí in ‘Summer 1993’, also by Carla Simón. Although of a choral nature, Otín manages to bring together that vote that she wants to give to the tape. Additionally, she is also nominated for CEC medals.

Against: Unlike the male revelation category, the female one is more profiled. While Otín could have been a good winner, she is up against Laura Galán, widely recognized for ‘Cerdita’ and who has become the clear favorite in a year when the award seems more predictable.

3 Jordi Pujol Dolcet, for ‘Alcarràs’
Jordi Pujol Dolcet, for 'Alcarràs'

In favor: Like Albert Bosch, both are part of the Golden Bear winner in Berlin. For many months ‘Alcarràs’ enjoyed the title of favourite, such as for being chosen to represent Spain at the Oscars. His role in Carla Simón’s film had more weight than Bosch’s and this could benefit him.

Against: It’s an open category, and as with Bosch, the split of votes can result in the winner being another nominee from someone else’s film, like Mikel Bustamante, who has options thanks to a possible drag-and-drop effect with ‘Five little wolves’ . Furthermore, the fact that he is not nominated for the CEC medals puts him at a handicap compared to Bosch or Bustamante, who qualify for this award.

4 Laura Galán, for ‘Cerdita’
Laura Galán, for 'Cerdita'

In favor: Given the age restrictions imposed by the Academy, Carla Quílez, brand new Silver Shell as best actress at the 70th San Sebastián Film Festival for ‘La maternal’, could not compete for the Goyas. This, of course, left the trail open for Laura Galán, for ‘Cerdita’. She is the soul of the film. Additionally, she is one of the few Revelation nominees (both genders) to have opted for the awards in the previous run, as she was nominated for Best Actress in Forqué and Feroz; as well as being nominated in the same category in the CEC medals.

Against: The desire to surprise. Few categories seem more sung than this one. Galán carries the full weight of his film, which only happens with Luna Pamies with ‘El agua’ among the rest of the candidates. It is also true that the genre and theme of ‘Cerdita’ are not much to the liking of the Academy and this could lead to some voters choosing to support another candidate.

5 Mikel Bustamante, for ‘Five Little Wolves’
Mikel Bustamante, for 'Five Little Wolves'

In favor: He is emerging as one of the strongest candidates, in a category that, for the moment, remains very open. He is also nominated for the CEC medal and has the advantage of belonging to one of the favorite films in these awards, “Cinco lobitos”. Precisely, this can cause a drag-and-drop effect that guides you as the winner. His experience, he has an important career behind him, can also have an impact when it comes to giving him the winner.

Against: In reality, his presence in the film does not have the same weight as that of the other protagonists. The category remains very open. Furthermore, in recent weeks, the winds have blown in favor of Telmo Irureta, whose charisma has managed to win over the press. Precisely, the vote of the heart was what promoted winners like Benedicta Sánchez or Jesús Vidal.

6 Luna Pamies, for ‘Water’
Luna Pamies, for 'Water'

In favor: Luna Pamies could be the alternative to favorite Laura Galán. Like the protagonist of ‘Cerdita’, you have the protagonist of ‘El agua’, also in the running for the award for best new director. Presented at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in Cannes, his presence was left in the background in the award ceremony of newcomers Carlota Pereda for the much-quoted ‘Cerdita’ and Alauda Ruiz de Azúa for ‘Cinco lobitos’. In a quest to hand out awards and given that Pamies stars in drama, a genre more accessible to academics than horror, this could tip the balance in his favor.

Against: Laura Galan. Precisely in its eagerness to distribute awards, the Academy has in this category the possibility of recognizing Pereda’s film, applauded at Sundance and Sitges and whose short film has already won the Goya and which in the best new director section clashes with the favorite ‘ Five Wolves’. So when it comes to wanting to be fairer in the awards, it is in the best new actress that the Academy has the best options to award “Cerdita”. Nor does it help that Pamies is not present at other awards (except those of the CEC), which happens with Galán.

7 Christian Checa, for ‘On the edge’
Christian Checa, for 'On the edge'

In favor: He is also one of the youngest candidates and is gaining popularity thanks to his television profile, with series such as “Brigada Costa del Sol”, “Alba” or “Vamos Juan”. He is also one of the candidates in the same category for the CEC medals. His interpretation belongs to a ribbon of a social nature, which can project him among the most committed academics.

Against: Despite being among the CEC candidates, his presence in ‘En los margínes’ is very limited, given the choral nature of the film, where only Luis Tosar stands out. While his youth may be a value in his favor, it also goes in the opposite direction, as academics may choose to recognize the work of Mikel Bustamante, for example, with a similar presence in ‘Cinco lobitos’ but with a more broad.

8 Valeria Sorolla, for ‘The Festival of Spring’
Valeria Sorolla, for 'The Festival of Spring'

In favor: In recent weeks, Telmo Irureta has stood out as one of the favorites in the nominations for male revelations. This can cause some drag in the female counterpart of her. Valeria Sorolla holds half the weight of ‘The Sagra of Spring’ and this can be taken into consideration by academics.

Against: Face Laura Galán, favourites. She also has the con that if the Academy chooses to surprise, she has a more solid candidate, which is Luna Pamies for “El agua”. Another handicap is that you have not been present at other awards.

9 Telmo Irureta, for ‘The Festival of Spring’
Telmo Irureta, for 'The Festival of Spring'

In favor: His appointment has been gaining weight in recent weeks. The charisma of the actor himself has made him a favorite and he can emulate what has been accomplished by Benedicta Sánchez or Jesús Vidal. Furthermore, he can mobilize the vote of those academics most committed to diversity and inclusion. Added to this is the fact that he is the protagonist of his film, which gives him greater visibility and presence than the other candidates. He is, without a doubt, one of the favourites.

Against: Despite being one of the favourites, he is not among the nominees for the CEC medals, which puts him at a handicap. His film, ‘The Rite of Spring’ did not get a nomination in categories other than relief, which may mean that candidates with a drag effect, such as Mikel Bustamante thanks to ‘Cinco lobitos’ may prevail in the end.

10 Zoe Stein, for ‘Manticore’
Zoe Stein, for 'Manticore'

In favor: Zoe Stein had a presence in the pre-Goya run when she opted for Gaudí for Best New Performance and was nominated for Best New Actress in the CEC Medals. Your profile could be that of the alternative and the surprise.

Against: The nominations of Laura Galán and Luna Pamies are well established, especially that of the actress “Cerdita”. Nor does the controversy Stein’s character has experienced in the press help.

All of them magnificent performances which served as a stupendous entry into the world of cinema. The lucky ones will be known on February 11th who join the select club which already includes well-known actors such as Santiago Segura, Belén Rueda, Fele Martínez, María Valverde, Dani Rovira, Anna Castillo, Enric Auquer or Eva Llorach.
