Paramount just dated the Ridley Scott-directed sequel for November 22, 2024.
After sun Oscar-nominated best actor Paul Mescal is in talks to star in the film, Deadline reports first.
Scott co-produced David Scarpa’s script with Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher.
As Justin Kroll first reported, Mescal is not replacing Russell Crowe’s Maximus from the first film who died. He plays Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), who is now a grown man as the story takes place years after the end of the first film. Lucius was also the cousin of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the son of the Roman leader Marcus Aurelius, who killed his father and succeeded to the throne. Commodus ended up in the gladiatorial ring with Maximus – who, although mortally wounded, stabbed the emperor to death before disappearing into the great afterlife to be reunited with his murdered wife and son. Maximus saved the boy and his mother while avenging his own family and made a strong impression on young Lucius.
November 22nd is the weekend before Thanksgiving 2024. No other tentpoles are currently scheduled on this date. gladiator 2 will precede the November 27 theatrical release of an untitled Disney animated film.
