The mood changes as one of the invaders sacrifices himself whenever Andrew and Eric refuse to sacrifice a member of their family. Every time one of the strangers dies, a “plague” is unleashed on the earth: huge earthquakes, a flu epidemic, and planes start falling from the sky.
Andrew remains true to his belief that strangers lie and suffer shared delusions. Andrew also realizes that Redmond is the man who attacked him in a bar years earlier for being gay.

During the initial attack on the cabin, Eric suffered a concussion. Over the course of the film, Eric is noted to begin to believe in strangers. One by one, strangers die in front of Andrew, Eric and Wen. Leonard is the last to leave. He warns Andrew and Eric that they have only minutes to decide to make a sacrifice when he dies. If they refuse, humanity as they know it will end and only the three of them will be left.
“All of humanity has been judged,” Leonard says before taking his own life. Suddenly, dark clouds descend over the cabin.
What happens at the end of hit the shack?
Eric admits he saw a “figure in the light” and Andrew says he believes him. Eric points out that it wasn’t just a random home invasion. The four strangers are actually the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Eric wants to make the sacrifice now. Andrew also volunteers to die. Eric tells Andrew that he is at peace with his sacrifice. Andrew kills Eric with his gun. “Dad Eric saved everyone?” Wen asks when Andrew will pick her up from the treehouse.
A fire burns down the house with Eric and the others inside. Andrew and Wen walk through the smoking forest as rain falls around them. Andrew finds a truck and a set of keys. It’s the truck the strangers drove before arriving at the cabin. Andrew goes through Leonard, Redmond, Adriane and Sabrina’s things in the backseat. Andrew realizes that all the things they said about his personal life were true.

Andrew and Wen walk off, stopping at a restaurant. They see on the news that the catastrophes have ceased. Andrew finally realizes that strangers have always told the truth and that Eric’s sacrifice actually prevented the end of the world.
In the film’s final moments, Andrew and Wen receive a signal from Eric. When they get back to the truck, “Boogie Shoes” starts playing on the radio. This song meant a lot to Eric, and this is clearly a sign from him that everything is going to be okay.
