Seth Rogen Says Marvel Movies Are For Kids And They’re “Not Just For Me”

Seth Rogen has done his fair share of comic book projects in his career with projects like Green Hornet, Preacher, The boysAND Invincible. These projects have mostly been on the darker, edgier side of comic book properties, and with his obvious love of comics, you’d think he’d like the movies that Marvel Studios makes! But is not so.

In a recent interview with Total Film Rogen admitted that as an adult he just can’t get into Marvel movies. He explained that those films are too “oriented towards” children, and as someone without children, he says films are not for him. He explained:

“I think Kevin Feige is a brilliant guy, and I think a lot of the filmmakers he’s hired to make these films are great filmmakers. But as someone who has no children… It is [all] kinda geared towards kids, you know? There are times I will forget. I’ll look at one of those things, as an adult with no kids, and go, ‘Oh, this isn’t for me.'”

However, he gives them credit for paving the way The boys to exist. He went on to say:

“In truth, without Marvel, ‘The Boys’ wouldn’t exist or be interesting. I am aware of it. I think if it was just Marvel [in the marketplace]that would be bad. But I think it is not – clearly. One example I always give is that there’s a point in history where a group of filmmakers would sit around and say, “Do you think we’ll ever make a movie again that isn’t a western?” Everything is a western! Westerns rule the fucking movies. If he doesn’t have a hat, a gun and a carriage, people won’t go to see him again.’”

I can understand that. Marvel projects are definitely kid-oriented, they’re now a Disney brand, and kids are their primary market. While I enjoy watching Marvel movies, they are always more fun to watch with kids! My kids are teenagers now, and well, they don’t go to Marvel movies with me anymore, but they go to horror movies with me, so I can’t complain! Rogen went on to explain:

“The situation, unfortunately, is that we now have two separate fields: there is world audiovisual entertainment and there is cinema. They still overlap from time to time, but it’s getting rarer. And I fear that the financial dominance of one is being used to marginalize and even demean the existence of the other.

This is an argument filmmakers have been making for years, and it’s true. Studios will always go on the safe bet to make that money, and Marvel is always making money.

What do you think of Marvel movies? Am I in line with what Rogen is saying here?
