Among the many impressive announcements of James Gunn and Peter Safran in the future of the DC Universe, they highlighted great projects such as “Superman Legacy” or the younger version of Batman with his son Damian Wayne. However, there is one title to keep in mind, it is the new series ‘Green Lantern’, which will tell a mystery story like ‘True Detective’.
Through social networks, and in an interview for The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed the title of the new series of ‘Green Lantern’ that will simply be ‘lanterns’, and which will replace the production formerly known as ‘Green Lantern Corps’ for HBO Max. But what is really interesting is the title with which they compared this story.
Peter Safran said that ‘Lanterns’ is over “a “True Detective” type mystery.’, with our two Lanterns [Verdes]. An earthly mystery,” said the director of DC Comics. Though I didn’t mention which season specifically, the show created by Nic Pizzolato and Cary Fukunaga stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, where they play two detectives investigating a case related to an ancient mystery.
In addition to this, Safran said the story of ‘lanterns’ will be played by Hal Jordan and John Stewart, two of the most beloved and famous Green Lanterns in comics. On how this HBO title will tie into the rest of the DCEU, Gunn said, “It leads to the overarching story that we’re telling across the different movies and TV shows. And we found this Ancient Horror on Earth. And these guys are basically, you know, super cops in the whole Earth.”

The history of “Lanterns” within the new DC Universe
The director of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ then explained how the plot of ‘Lanters’ will fit into the new DC Universe: “The story will go back and forth between the movies and the TV series.[…] Peacemaker is a good example of how this works. And that’s what we’re going to do with this big overarching story that we’re telling.”
The ‘Lanterns’ story still doesn’t have a showrunner, writers or cast to bring Hal Jordan and John Stewart to life, so the eight episodes Seth Grahame-Smith had written in 2019 were scrapped entirely, while Guy Gardner, Alan Also Scott, Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine have been excluded from this new reboot.
This story will have a more “earthly” plot, however, ‘Lantern’ does not have a release date on HBO Max. But it will be the second production within the first chapter of the EUDC, known as “Gods & Monsters”, and will arrive after the movie “Superman Legacy”, which will be released in 2025.
