As you’ve seen from his comedy series projects, not only do they offer great humor, but there’s also an emotional weight to the stories, and that’s something that’s important to the actor and producer. He also uses classic 1980s comedy Airplane! as an example:

“I don’t think there’s any point in telling a story if you don’t have an emotional connection to it. If you don’t feel invested and moved by it, it kind of doesn’t last. It becomes meaningless. It’s frivolous. Yesterday we were also talking about one of the reasons why ‘Airplane!’, which you consider such a silly movie with 100 beats per minute and it’s funny, because it lasted.”

Goldstein went on to drive his point home by explaining what it makes Airplane! one of the greatest comedies ever made, saying:

“You care about the plane that lands, you care about this love story, you want them to succeed. You’re invested in these characters, as ridiculous as that movie is. It’s a pretty extreme example, but it still has heart, that movie. There’s still emotion in it. I think without that, I don’t want to watch it. I don’t want to make it.”

He scores big points here! Yes, the movie has a line in every single scene, but you care about the characters and root for them throughout the movie. I love that movie and every time I watch it I seem to notice something I’ve never seen before. The movie is so funny you might not notice how great the story and character development is, so thanks to Goldstein for pointing that out!
