Sundance Review: ONYX THE FORTUITOUS AND THE TALISMAN OF SOULS is a goofy funny supernatural comedy

Remember that hilariously weird Satanist kid who makes those hilarious YouTube videos? Well, his real name is Andrew Bowser and he came out and made a movie based on his funny satanist character titled Onyx The Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, and made its big premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. This movie wasn’t on my radar at all, so it was a pleasant surprise when I saw Weird Satanist Guy pop up on screen because I love those videos he’s made!

The film is exactly what you’d expect from the boy, and is filled with Bowser’s signature comedic style. It’s just deliciously goofy, supernatural fun! With all the dark and depressing movies I watch at Sundance, this is the kind of movie that makes me breathe a little and discover the joy of watching movies once again.

Even though the whole thing is ridiculously silly, the story and script are really good! It tells a funny story and is also full of hilarious laugh out loud, depending on your style of humor, and I loved it!

Bowser takes on the role of amateur occultist Marcus J. Trillbury, aka Onyx the Fortuitous, and he’s struggling. “He’s misunderstood at home and at work, but his dreams of a new life seem to be fulfilled when he receives a coveted invitation to the home of his idol Bartok the Great for a ritual to awaken the spirit of an ancient demon. He excitedly joins Bartok and his eclectic group of devotees as they prepare for the ceremony, but pretty quickly it becomes apparent that all is not as it seems. As Onyx and his new friends fight to keep their souls, he must decide what he’s truly willing to sacrifice to meet his destiny.

The visual effects in the movie were done on the cheap, but they were still great! The ghoulish characters had a more cartoonish feel which reminded me of the characters we might see in the world of Tim Burton’S Cockroach juice. This movie was pretty much like a live-action cartoon, and there’s a certain charm to it that made me happy.

Bowser wrote, directed and starred in the film, and he must have had a lot of fun making it. The description reads that “Bowser takes us on a wild ride of magic and fun with just the right mix of satanic worship and friendship. Featuring terrifying monsters and dark silly laughter, Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls it’s a creative and joyful celebration of weirdos of all kinds.

It is for sure! When this movie comes out, I hope you give it a try!
