The Golden Raspberry Awards, better known as “The Razzies,” are a parody awards show that honors the worst cinematic achievements. Co-founded by UCLA film graduates and film industry veterans John JB Wilson and Mo Murphy, the satirical annual Razzie Awards ceremony preceded its opposite, the Academy Awards, by four decades.
Awards usually get a good chuckle from nominees and movie fans alike, like in 2010 when Sandra Bullock received two Razzies for “Worst Actress” and “Worst Screen Couple” along with co-star Bradley Cooperfor their movie All about Steve. That could easily be shrugged off, as it was the same year that Bullock won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal in The blind side.
But this year, those behind the Razzies have gotten into real trouble. When the nominees were announced earlier this week, the young actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong was included in the worst actresses list for her role in the remake, Fire Starter. Armstrong is only 12 and the internet was really upset that she would be targeted by this since she is only a child.
After backlash from many, including the former child actor Devon Sawa, who reportedly tweeted: “The Razzies are run by soulless people. Name a 12-year-old? Fuck them. That baby could become awesome if you didn’t get inside their head. (It seems Sawa deleted her tweet.)
And fellow child actor Julian Hilliardwhich appeared in Wanda Vision And Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness she also lent her support to Armstrong, writing, “The razzies are petty and classless already, but naming a child is just plain repulsive and wrong. Why put a child at risk for increased bullying or worse? Be better.”
In a statement, Razzies founder John Wilson apologized and confirmed that Armstrong’s name was removed from the ballot. He also said that in the future, children under the age of 18 will not be able to be nominated for the awards.
It would have been nice if someone had thought of this before the list was published, but at least it’s a positive step forward. Hopefully Ryan Kiera Armstrong will be able to shrug it off and move on with his career. After all, Sandra Bullock also won a Razzie, so she’s in good company.
