Paramount Pictures tried to get a new one Star Trek film from the ground for years with the manufacturer JJ Abrams. This is one of their biggest franchises and they can’t seem to get a new film in the franchise! It’s crazy because they brought in some pretty awesome talent, including Quentin Tarantino And Noah Hawleybut after Star Trek beyondthe TV side of things has propelled the franchise forward in really great ways!
In the latest issue of SFX Magazine, Star Trek veteran Jonathan Frakes he’s been talking about the future of the franchise, and as far as the movie side of things, he’s not hopeful. He said:
“Movies are hard! JJ too [Abrams] I can’t get this fourth movie off the ground. All those wonderful voices? Noah Hawley was attached to a “Star Trek” movie and Quentin was playing with people’s emotions about making a movie. If those two names can’t make a fucking movie, I don’t know. TV is the future, it seems to me.”
Yes, he’s right. It seems TV is the future of the franchise. Of course, it would be nice to see another one Star Trek adventure on the big screen, but it should be great! It’s going to have to meet the storytelling standards we’re seeing in the present Star Trek shows and none of the more recent movies have reached that level.
A quarter Star Trek the film under Abrams had been in the works for some time and would see Chris PinoCaptain Kirk joins his father, played by Chris Hemsworth. There was an interesting story there, but they never got around to putting it together. Since then there have been various other attempts to make a film, the most recent involved Matt Shakman (Wanda Vision) direction. But he dropped out and that project has since been shelved.
As for the TV side of things, Frakes has been heavily involved Star Trek: Picard and after the arrival of its third and final season, he still thinks there’s an opportunity to expand and continue the story for some of these characters. He said:
“I hope the road leads to another series. The setup is clearly there, as you will see, by the end of the season. It seems to me that the characters in this final season of ‘Picard’ should work, they are ready for another journey. I’m certainly an optimist. I think it could be the end of the ‘Picard’ story, but I’m not sure if it’s the end of the ‘Next Generation’ story. That’s the vibe. I’m an eternal optimist, I’m sure that’s what [showrunner] Terry [Matalas] would like to!”
Hell yeah! Let’s keep that Next generation the story goes! I totally agree! Therefore, we may not receive news Star Trek movies anytime soon, but there are a lot of great things happening with the shows that fans are enjoying. It’s so funny why Star Wars is having the same problem right now!
