Anthony Hopkins was cast Roland Emmerichthe upcoming drama series about gladiators Those who are about to die, and will take on a leading role. Hopkins will play the role of Vespasian, the emperor of Rome and head of the Flavian line.
Vespasian is described as “battle-proven, a rural greenhorn who reclaimed his throne after victory in a bloody ten-year civil war. He is aging and despised by the Patricians who fight for position in the Empire and try to supplant his heirs to the throne at the first chance they get.
Sounds like a solid role for Hopkins to take! I’m sure he’ll have some fun, and there’s no doubt he’ll deliver a great performance!
Those who are about to die is “an epic drama set in the complex and corrupt world of spectacle-driven gladiatorial competition. The series introduces a diverse set of characters from all parts of Roman society who collide at the crossroads of sports, politics and dynasties of the ancient world.
It actually looks like it could be a great series, but Emmerich is heavily involved as a producer and director, so we’ll just have to wait and see if it actually turns out to be good or not. I hope it is! Emmerich is really not the best storyteller.
But the series was written by Save Private Ryan scribe Roberto Rodat, and is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Daniel Mannix. So, Emmerich may have a solid script to work from. Production should begin this year in Italy and the series will come to Peacock.
