Tim Curry went through a harrowing process to become the Lord of Darkness in LEGEND

Legendary actor Tim Curry he’s had some wild costumes in his films over the years, viz The rocky horror movie And It comes to mind. But one that was even more taxing was the one he wore in the 1985 fantasy adventure film Legenddirected by Ridley Scott.

Curry’s co-stars in the film were young Tom Cruise And Ferris Bueller’s day off star My Sarahand in the film, he played Lord of Darkness, but had no idea how extensive this character’s costume would be until he was cast for the part.

According to Monsters of Makeup, Curry is already signed up for Legend before the plan for the Lord of Darkness was finalized. Much to her dismay, he discovered that with each new piece of concept art, more of his true face was being covered to portray the character.

Curry’s makeup and costume application process initially took eight hours a day, though the film’s artists cut it down to “just” five and a half hours after a while. Of course, it wasn’t just his face they were altering. His hands were also equipped with evil nails and skin, with meter-long fiberglass horns tied to the top of his head. The horns were initially too heavy and had to be made smaller to avoid straining Curry’s back. In their final form, Scott found it “odd” and “disarming” how light they actually were.

Every day after filming Curry had to sit in a bathroom for an hour just to remove all the stickers that had been applied to his face and body. He couldn’t even remove the makeup by force, as he learned at his expense after she lost her temper one day and tried to rip the material off, tearing her skin in the process. Scott spent a week circling Curry to “calm him down” afterwards.

The movie ended up bombing at the box office, so it seems like all those problems might have been for nothing. But we can look back on the film and certainly appreciate the artistry and hard work that went into the costume. Did you like the movie Legend?
